Course description:
Arguably one of the hardest moments about making art and being an artist comes when you need to step up and say: "This is a work and I want you to look at it and tell me how it makes you feel." You may have been more or less happy with what you were doing in the studio. Some parts about making art may even be fun and get you so excited you want to go back to where you left it the last day and do some more. But then we get to the deadline for a crit or show, and, on the doorstep of the soul, you wonder: "What the x am I doing? Who the x am I to do it? How the x am I going to get your attention?" Two main options present themselves. Number one is the conceptual claim: "Listen up, you need to consider my project because it's based on a good idea!" Number two is the holistic existential option: "Look, I give you all of me, so in return, give a little piece of your heart to me!" This is real. And it can drive you nuts. Giving the gift of your art feels like it's all about you. But when it comes to if and how the gift is received, it seems like it's not about you at all. How can you live with this contradiction?

This seminar series will consist of a series of talks about the histories, politics, psychologies and demonologies at play when a work is called a work, presenting different traditions and techniques for going about the transactions (between people, things, sensations, spirits and spaces) that shape art. The talks will be followed up by a seminar session in which participants are asked to coin concepts for building their own philosophy of handling how to call a piece a work.
