The Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University is beautifully located on the riverside in the centre of Umeå. The school started in 1987 in a renovated building, a former factory.  In 2011/12 the Academy moved into brand new fascilities at the Arts campus where also the Institute of Design, the School of Architecture and Bildmuseet, one of Sweden’s foremost venues for international contemporary art, are located. The Academy has well equipped workshops for wood, metal, plaster, bronze, printmaking, photo and video which are available to all students.

There are approximately 70 students at the school and each student has a studio space. The students acquire practical, technical and theoretical competence in the form of studies on their own, as well as taking part in courses, workshops, seminars and various exhibition-projects. Apart from the programmes the school offers one or a few summer courses each year.

Teaching languages
The programme at the BA level is officially taught in Swedish and the MA programme in English. However, if English speaking exchange students are accepted and join our BA programme, English is commonly used.

Nomination and Application deadlines
Autumn semester: Nomination deadline 1 April and application deadline 15 April
Spring semester: Nomination deadline 1 October and application deadline 15 October. Dates may vary slightly from year to year.

Semester dates
Autumn semester: last week of August until Christmas (4 months).
Spring semester: mid-January until late May (4 months)
